Raccoon

The raccoon is an animal that most people are well-acquainted with. They are found commonly in every one of the lower 48 States, in much of southern Canada and throughout Mexico and Central America. Raccoons are very adaptable animals and thrive in all kinds of habitats from the desert southwest to tropical forests and northern hardwoods. Unlike many wildlife, raccoons also do especially well in urban areas.

Raccoons are found statewide in Florida in ever-increasing numbers. Urbanization and agriculture often help their population because food often becomes more available in these conditions. Therefore, it is not at all uncommon to encounter raccoons near your home or neighborhood.

There is no mistaking a raccoon for any other animal. Its stout, bear-like body, prominent black mask and heavily furred, ringed tail all are distinctive. Adult raccoons are about 2 to 3 feet long (including their 10-inch tail) and weigh anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds. Larger animals sometimes are recorded, but Florida raccoons tend to be smaller than those farther north. Their color generally is a grizzled salt-and-pepper gray and black with a light belly. Often the "white" hairs are noticeably yellowish. Both all-black and all-white animals sometimes occur.

Raccoons are active mostly during the evening hours. On most days, they leave their den soon after dusk and are active until morning. It is not unusual, however, for them to linger in their den well past nightfall, and during particularly nasty weather they may not venture out at all.

Bald Eagle

The official bird of the United States soars above the trees and homes at Key Marco.
Bald Eagles feast mainly on fish and seize their prey from the water by utilizing their strong talons.

These magnificent birds use large sticks, Spanish moss, grass, and leaves to build huge nests (up to 9 feet wide) in tall trees. They often use the same nest for many years.

Bald Eagles form long-term bonds with their mates, pairing-up for many years. If one member of the pair dies, the survivor does choose a new mate. Florida Bald Eagles mate in the winter, laying their eggs between late November and early February. They typically migrate north during the summer.

The young eagles are a chocolate brown color with some patches of white on their tails, bellies, and wing-linings. They don’t achieve their white head and tail feathers until they are four years old. They lose all of their immature plumage by their sixth year.

There are more than 3,000 Bald Eagles in Florida.

High above the sparkling blue waters Brown Pelicans soar, circle, and then dive in for a meal of fish. They usually live in colonies on mangrove islands, such as the ones found around Key Marco.

Brown pelicans are some of Florida’s largest and most-engaging birds. Mated pairs remain together for one year, brooding and raising their young.

Up to 70 percent of pelicans die during their first year of life, often from starvation. A pelican can live up to 20 years, but very few make it that long. Only 2 percent live even 10 years.

Florida Bobcat

These bobcats (Lynx Rufus) are at home in forests, swamps, and on hammock land. They are excellent climbers and are often seen perched on tree limbs high above the ground.

Bobcats use their razor-sharp claws and needle-like teeth as weapons to catch their prey. Although they can move quickly if threatened, bobcats typically move about in a slow and deliberate manner.

There 2 to 4 young in a normal litter. The newborn kits have full coats of spotted fur. Once of age, they are taught hunting skills by their parents and are weaned in about two months.
